What we are studying...
We have transformed a previously ignored courtyard into a biodiversity study site for our AP Environmental Science course. We have stopped the regular mowing of the courtyard to study the process of succession (i.e., how a biological community changes over time). As this courtyard changes, we predict that the overall plant and animal biodiversity will increase. To better understand the relationship between succession and biodiversity, we are looking at species richness and species abundance/evenness with both the Shannon-Weiner and Simpson's indices.
